Here’s a little bit about what we’ve been up to……
We have had the water tray out and have been seeing what floats and what sinks and how we can make things sink. The children worked out that by putting heavy things on the boats they could make them sink. Why not try some floating and sinking activities in the bath? A few plastics bowls and some marbles or little people would be ideal. Some of the children were very smart and worked out straight away that if they pushed their boat under the water it would fill up with water and sink!
In the sand tray we have been looking at light and heavy with the older children. They have also been using our balance scales to see which items weigh more than others. The younger children have also been exploring the sand, using scoops to fill up containers (and then empty them over the floor :))
A few of the older children helped to write a letter to Santa the other day, I have taken it to post and we’re all looking forward to Santa’s reply. Christmas fever hasn’t fully hit nursery yet but it will do by Tuesday when December begins. The children have spied the advent calendar we have got and are looking forward to opening the doors each day.
Beebot has been out and about around a treasure island this week, the children worked out which arrows they had to push to get him where hey wanted. Sometimes he ended up in shark infested water, other times he ended up by a lion cave, but luckily he made it out in one piece. Working out directions is quite a tricky concept, I still often struggle with it but it’s a great way for children to develop their problem solving skills. Why not see if your child can direct you home? See if there are any landmarks that they recognise, you’ll probably be amazed by what they take in. If you end up in completely the wrong place I take no responsibility!
We had a great surpirse yesterday, the children at school had a visit from Cinderella and she popped in to nursery to say hello, this was very exciting and even more so when she came back with stickers. Cinderella is on at Princes Hall in Aldershot, from personal experience it is a great panto and everyone is encouraged to get involved with the dancing and singing.
We’ve also been doing lots of constructing. We made a huge rocket and moon rover from various boxes, the children added lots of buttons and gadgets, they then put on special suits so they could walk on the planets. It was great to see the children working together and offering help and advice to each other. As well as box modelling we have been building zoos with duplo, sea creatures with Octons and racing cars with Knex. we love construction resources as they are very open ended and you get to see the childrens imagination explode with different ideas.
In language group the children have been playing Kim’s game and looking at matching words to sounds, some of the younger children have started to join in so Hayley is also doing a recap of all the letters and sounds.
In number group the children have had various resources to explore such as the abacus, calculator, compare bears and marbles. Lulu has been sitting back and watching what the children do with these resources, stepping in occasionally with a suggestion or idea.
We have changed snack to a “rolling snack bar”, this opens at 10am and shuts around 10.45, the children can choose when they would like snack. They continue to pour their own milk and select their own fruit, they have even started doing their own washing and drying up, we’ll have them doing the hoovering next
If you’re up to anything Christmassy over the weekend please send in photos and as usual we’d love to see pictures of your decorated Christmas tree when you put it up.
